Being a mum is a full-time job, so it’s essential to find intentional ways to take care of ourselves. But elaborate self-care practices can be a struggle when you're on a tight budget! Thankfully, there are plenty of free self-care ideas that you can incorporate into your daily routine.

Here are 14 of the best free self-care ideas for the budget-conscious mum!

1.Unplug from social media

As busy mums, it’s not always a practical option to completely unplug from our devices in case of emergencies. But we can cut down on our social media use to minimize electronic distractions! Try taking a week or even just an afternoon logged out of your social media accounts to free up some mental space.

2. Take a bath

A warm bath could be the soothing break you need! You can add Epsom salts or essential oils that you already have at home to help you unwind.

3. Give yourself a manicure

You don’t have to go all out to feel a little fancy. Pull out those old nail polish colors and give yourself a homemade manicure for some beautifying self-care.

4. Make your bed

It may be simple but it helps! Taking just a couple of minutes to make your bed will start your day off on the right foot and can make your evening more relaxing.

5. Try a face mask

Put a sheet face mask in the fridge overnight so you can use it in the morning for a little spa treatment! The cold sensation can also help wake you up as you get ready or make your morning coffee.

6. Get your creative juices flowing!

Find whatever materials you have around the house and get crafty. Painting? Coloring? The choice is yours! Plus this is a fun way to spend time with your kids.

7. Take a walk

Got 20 minutes to spare? Take a lap around the block or to the closest park! You can even bring your kiddos along for some fresh air and sunshine.

8. Follow a yoga routine video on YouTube

You don’t have to have a gym membership for a good yoga class! Find a YouTube video that suits your abilities and time constraints and get stretching.

9. Make a new playlist

Music changes every mood! I love switching up what I listen to every now and then by asking friends for song recommendations and making new playlists with my favorites.

10. Read for 15 minutes

As mums it can be a struggle to get through books. I get it! Try setting a timer for 15 minutes and getting through as much as you can. Or if you’re tight on time, put an audiobook on in the background around the house! For some recommendations check out our blog on 5 of the best self-care books for mums.

11. Make a gratitude list- if you have time!

Sometimes we just need to take a step back and express our gratitude for this life! If you have a minute, write down what you’re thankful for and put your list somewhere you can refer to often.

12. Call your best friend

No one knows you quite like your best friend! Make time to give them a ring and check in when you can. There’s just something sweet about hearing the voice of our favorite people and getting updates on each other’s lives.

13. Just say “no”

Sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is say “no!” Overcommitment only brings us stress so doing less can be the perfect self-care.

14. Make yourself a special drink of choice!

The perfect drink can feel like a relaxing warm hug. Take a minute to make yourself a chai, coffee, or matcha. You can also mix up your hydration habits by making flavored water with your favorite fruits!

Self-care is essential! And it doesn’t require a huge budget to make it happen. For more practical self-care tools check out our blog on 5 of the best self-care apps for busy mums.
