While being a mum is incredibly rewarding, it can also be demanding, leaving us with little time for self-care. For many mums, it can be difficult to prioritize our own needs when we have little ones relying on us 24/7!

Too often this leaves us feeling guilty or selfish for taking time for ourselves. But the truth is that making yourself a priority isn't selfish; in fact, it's essential for both your well-being and the well-being of your family.

You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup

As mums, we're responsible for our children’s physical, emotional, and mental health. We’re constantly on call for mum duty! But if we're not taking care of ourselves first, we won't have the energy, patience, or mental clarity to meet our kid’s needs. In other words, you can’t pour from an empty cup!

If you're constantly pouring out energy without taking the time to replenish yourself, you'll eventually burn out. That’s why prioritizing your needs is so important. When you take a minute to care for yourself this allows you to recharge your batteries and be the best mom you can be.

You're Setting a Positive Example

Kids love to be copycats! They see our behavior and automatically want to do as we do. So if we’re constantly putting everyone else's needs before our own, our children may grow up believing that self-care isn't essential or that it's selfish to take care of ourselves.

On the other hand, when we prioritize ourselves, we're setting a positive example for our families! We end up showing them that it's possible to take care of both ourselves and others simultaneously. What a great lesson to learn from a young age!

You Deserve It

Finally, it's essential to understand that you deserve to take care of yourself. You're a person with needs and desires before you’re a mum, and it's essential to honor that! Taking time for yourself isn't selfish; it's an act of self-love and respect. And you can still love and care for your family while respecting your needs as an individual.

While it’s much easier said than done, know that making yourself a priority isn’t selfish. It’s actually a crucial part of being a happy and healthy mum! For practical ways to implement self-care habits into your life check out our other blogs on self-care.
